    Braid/leader

I have been using 10/2 powerpro and 20 lb leader.   I got a few breakoffs at the braid to leader knots, uni to uni without superglue.  The braid cut the leader below the knot which had been tied for a long time and had made many casts.  So I decided to try just braid to lure and/or jig head.

My short term results of not using leader were positive for reds, snook and trout in clear water.  I tied directly using the single line and Palomar knots.  Maybe the limpness if the braid made up for not using a loop knot?  Maybe I was just lucky?

Would small braid, no leader, work well with the FlatsClass rig?

When/why is a leader required with small braid?

Are there better ways to attach braid to leader than uni to uni knots?

Would super glue have prevented the breakoffs?

Is there a tougher leader that wouldn't be eventually cut by braid knot pressure?  I used InvisiLine

    Re: Braid/leader

    Slotsize,

Here is a couple of ideas to minimize line to leader breakoffs: 1.) Double your 10# braid when tying your line to leader uni-knots.  2.) Upsize your braid to 15# or 20# if you do not want to re-tie your leader after every 150 casts or so, 10# gets weak from a lot of hard casting.  3.) try a surgeon's knot in place of the uni-knot but remember with both these knots you must lubricate the knot and properly seat the knot for either one to be strong!

Leader is necessary when using the Flats Class Rig, braid is much to limp...it also is needed when fishing treble hooked plugs or you'll find the braid will foul the front treble hook on most casts.

Super glue helps coat a knot so it eases through the guides of your rod better but not really that big of a strength advantage. It's more important to lubricate, pull, and seat the knot tightly to eliminate break-offs...

Try using 20# Sufix Performance Braid it's super thin and round it will hold a better knot and you won't lose any casting distance.

    Re: Braid/leader

I was using doubled 10 lb braid in the uni - uni knots.

The leader broke not the braid.  It broke right behind the braid uni knot.  I imagine that the braid slipped enough over time to cut the leader material which is why I thought super glue may stop any slippage?

Double the line, Spider Hitch or Bimini, then connect using a triple surgeon knot for mono

that is larger than 30lb, if lighter that than I use a Quad. Has never let me down and have made

    lots of money with it.
